The systems available to support screening for this under recognised clinical issue in GP

1 Watch the lecture by cardiologist Dr Nicholas Aroney in tonight’s webcast
2 Here is the link to enrol – healthed-test.kiratech.com.au/murmur
3 Randomly select 10 regular patients over 65yo, read their clinical records over the past 12 months, and note how often cardiac auscultation was done

Topics to be covered

RSV – What You Need to Know
A/Prof Michael Woodward AM

We used to think that Respiratory Syncytial Virus mainly affected children, with its most troublesome manifestation being croup. No more. We now know that RSV infection can cause significant morbidity even in adults, particularly older adults, and is not only common but highly infectious and can cause repeated infections throughout life. In this talk, Associate Professor Michael Woodward will provide an update on what is now known about this virus in Australia as well as advising what is coming in terms of prevention and treatment of RSV, including vaccines which are hoped will soon become available for those vulnerable to severe RSV infection.

Prostate Cancer Screening – The Latest Thinking
A/Prof Jeremy Grummet

Changes in guidelines to PSA testing are coming. Confusion has clouded the issue of PSA testing for prostate cancer now for many years. Benefits in mortality and morbidity have been weighed against the risks of overtreatment of unharmful types of prostate cancer. However, recent major changes in routine practice including MRI, transperineal biopsy and active surveillance have mitigated these risks enormously. Associate Professor Jeremy Grummet will explain how, and provide the very latest evidence-based thinking on PSA testing to inform your daily practice.

Early Detection of Aortic Stenosis for Better Outcomes
Dr Nicholas Aroney

Aortic stenosis is increasingly being recognised as one of the most common, potentially severe and yet treatable causes of valvular disease in older Australians. And yet many affected people remain undiagnosed, missing the chance for early treatment and ultimately a longer, healthier life. In this presentation, cardiologist, Dr Nick Aroney presents the latest evidence on the current prevalence and incidence of aortic stenosis in Australia, as well as providing tips on how it can be detected early and the importance of timely intervention through appropriate referral.

VLEDs for T2D Remission
A/Prof Samantha Hocking

Very Low Energy Diets are a valuable, effective but under-utilised option for managing type 2 diabetes in adult patients who are overweight and obese. In this talk, endocrinologist Associate Professor Samantha Hocking will present new and existing evidence for the role of VLEDs in achieving type 2 diabetes remission and, importantly, how they can be practically implemented and managed in the general practice setting.
