Patients taking medications for weight loss often ask if they will ever be able to stop or reduce their dose without sacrificing results – but until now, there has not been randomised controlled data to inform the answers.

However, in May, the Lancet published results from SURMOUNT-MAINTAIN1, the first randomised controlled trial to examine whether patients can maintain weight loss and cardiometabolic benefits at a lower dose of an effective obesity medication.

This article summarises the key findings and offers practical guidance on how Australian GPs can apply this evidence in clinical consultations.
