Topics to be covered

RSV is More Serious Than We Think
Prof Grant Waterer

We used to think that Respiratory Syncytial Virus mainly affected children, occasionally causing severe disease in young infants. We now know that RSV infection can cause significant morbidity even in adults, particularly older adults, and is not only common but highly infectious and can cause repeated infections throughout life. In this talk, Professor Grant Waterer will provide an update on what is now known about this virus in Australia, its impact on older people and an update on prevention and treatment, especially the new vaccines.

Dairy Intolerance in Infants – Fact and Fiction
Dr Rupert Hinds

By working through the common misconceptions around dairy intolerance and allergy, Associate Professor Rupert Hinds will explain how to sort fact from fiction with young patients and their parents. Exactly what are the gastrointestinal manifestations of cow’s milk allergy in infants, who might have lactose intolerance and which symptoms are being incorrectly attributed to the child's milk intake. He will also provide practical advice on how to manage infants with these allergies and intolerances, including appropriate assessment, red flags, diagnosis and long-term monitoring.

Menstrual Disorders and Fertility
Dr Fleur Cattrall

Menstrual disorders can occur across a woman's reproductive lifespan. In this session, gynaecologist, Dr Fleur Cattrall will explore the different menstrual issues affecting women at different stages of their life from teenage years to menopause as well as examining the important link to fertility and reproduction. In addition, she will provide valuable insights into the key areas of assessment, investigation, diagnosis and management of menstrual problems, as well as address the practical considerations of these for fertility.

Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer - Should we Recommend it?
A/Prof Jeremy Grummet

As the name implies, focal therapy for prostate cancer aims to only treat the malignant tissue sparing the rest of the prostate gland. This focal therapy should result in fewer of the side effects associated with prostatectomy or even radiotherapy. Less urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Quicker recovery rates. Lower complication rates. But could these benefits be at the cost of less effective cancer treatment? In this talk, Associate Professor Jeremy Grummet unpacks the evidence for the latest options to treat prostate cancer, giving us the pros and cons for treatment of both early and later-stage disease.
