Iron deficiency in heart failure is not only common but represents a serious risk factor for poorer outcomes. More and more evidence points to a significant association between iron deficiency and heart failure. Here, A/Prof Ingrid Hopper details the latest understanding of the link between these two conditions including the prevalence of iron deficiency in heart failure, why it occurs and the reasons why it is important to treat. She will also present the recommendations for treatment which are not as straightforward as many people would imagine.

Be it coeliac disease or gluten intolerance, overcoming the challenges of diagnosis and gluten avoidance is key to effective management. Increasingly, it appears, people are avoiding gluten in an attempt to alleviate abdominal symptoms such as bloating and pain. In this webcast, Prof Finlay Macrae will present an update on what the guidelines recommend in terms of diagnosing coeliac disease and gluten sensitivity. In addition, he will outline a practical approach to the management of these conditions that will include tips to overcoming common challenges patients face when trying to adopt a gluten-free diet as well as advice on what to do for patients whose abdominal symptoms don't resolve with dietary measures.

Changes in asthma guidelines and increases in treatment options available can sometimes make the management of this common condition a challenge. The fundamental pathophysiology that underpins asthma is now recognised to exist even in the absence of symptoms, and not addressing this can increase the risk of exacerbations and make the persistence of symptoms much more likely. In this presentation, Dr David Freiberg will translate how the latest evidence-based recommendations can and should be applied in the clinical setting and how best to achieve optimal asthma symptom control, safely and effectively in the real-world setting.
