COVID Update - Delta Crisis Update, New ATAGI Advice, Vaccination for Children & Pregnant Women
View profile
ATAGI is now making special recommendations for Sydney. Should we be shortening or lengthening the intervals for COVID jabs? People of all ages are now being encouraged to have the AZ if they can’t get access to the Pfizer jab. Understand the risk/benefit considerations for each age group so that you can more effectively explain these things to your patients. A/Prof Wood will also provide an update on the Delta variant and what it means for us while we wait for the national vaccination program to catch up with this tricky new variant. Which vaccines currently work and by how much against this and other variants. How long will the Sydney lockdown last? Will it actually work? The question of vaccinating children is now emerging and this is likely to be a thorny issue. Current available data concerning safety and effectiveness of the COVID vaccines for children and pregnant women will be explained.

Depressive illness varies in features and as such, therapeutic agents should be selected on the likely clinical efficacy for a given individual. The side effect profile must also be considered. Both should be discussed with patient. This has been emphasised in the new mood disorders guidelines.

Management of depression extends beyond relief of the basic symptoms. Quality of life and relationships, employment and self-perception require functional wellness. Medication choices, counselling and regular follow-up with careful monitoring are needed.

There is a wide and increasing range of antipsychotic agents and the choices made need to be integrated into a shared-care model. Conveying an understanding of side effects is very important. Management pathways will involve a range of expertise with the GP having a crucial role in diagnosis and follow up.

Metabolic dysregulation is a potential side effect of antipsychotics. This includes changes in cholesterol, triglycerides, BSL and BMI. These changes can cause or exacerbate comorbidities. This is a complex area and predictors are poorly understood. Weight gain is a major problem for compliance.

This segment, facilitated by Dr Cathy Andronis, will cover four case studies.
