Topics to be covered

Managing Persistent Asthma
Dr Christopher Worsnop

While most adult patients with asthma can be readily and effectively managed in general practice, there exists a small group of patients who present with persistent asthma symptoms despite our best efforts. In this presentation, Dr Christopher Worsnop will walk us through how to approach such patients. Starting with how best to confirm the diagnosis of asthma, including commonly confused differential diagnoses, all the way to which patients might need triple therapy and when it should be initiated. Dr Worsnop will not only update clinicians on the latest evidence-based guidelines but will also present how optimal management of asthma looks in the real world setting.

ADHD in Adults
Dr Pansy Lai

Increasingly, adult patients are presenting to their GP with the question "Could I have ADHD?" The reality is, there exists so many myths and misconceptions about adult ADHD, it is hard to sort fact from fiction, even for clinicians. In this presentation, Dr Pansy Lai will do just that. Along with tackling some of the more common misconceptions about the condition, Dr Lai will also talk about its prevalence, key presenting features and how GPs can help in the assessment and management of these often distressed patients.

Endometriosis and Infertility
Dr Frank Quinn

One in 10 Australian women has endometriosis. But among women struggling to fall pregnant, this figure rises to four in ten.Endometriosis is thought to affect fertility through a range of mechanisms from inflammatory responses affecting sperm and implantation to actually altering pelvic anatomy in more severe cases. In this talk, fertility expert Dr Frank Quinn will discuss the medical, surgical, and assisted conception options available to women with endometriosis who are having difficulty conceiving. He will also provide an understanding on how to determine the most appropriate approach for the individual woman who presents with both endometriosis and infertility.

Recurrent Abdominal Pain in School-Age Children
Dr Rupert Hinds

Chronic abdominal pain in children is a common presentation in general practice, but that doesn't mean management is easy. Even though you know a serious underlying cause of the pain is rare, you don't want to miss it. By the same token, you don't want to put the child through a barrage of unnecessary tests either. In this talk, Dr Rupert Hinds will give an overview of the likely causes of chronic abdominal pain in children, and, importantly, provide a practical assessment and management framework for GPs faced with this sometimes challenging presentation.
